Choosing a spread
Match the size of the spread to the size of the question. More cards is not more insight, it is more to hold in your head at once.
One card
A daily pull or a yes or no. One card, one clear signal. Best when the question is small.
Three cards
Past, present, future. Or situation, obstacle, advice. Enough to see movement without losing the thread.
Five cards
Room for two people, or for the parts of one problem. Relationship and shadow work spreads live here.
Ten cards
The Celtic Cross. Every angle of one question. Save it for things that deserve an hour.
How to read a spread
Ask one clear question
Something specific enough that a card can answer it. Vague questions get vague readings.
Shuffle with it in mind
Hold the question while you shuffle. Stop when it feels done. There is no correct number of shuffles.
Lay the cards in order
Deal into the positions in the order the spread gives. Face down until every position is filled.
Read each position
Turn one card at a time and read it through its position. The Tower in a past position means something different from The Tower as advice.
Read the whole
Step back. Which suit dominates, which cards echo each other, where the story turns. That is the reading.
Frequently asked questions.
What is a tarot spread?
A spread is a set layout of positions, each with its own meaning. You deal one card into each position and read the card through that position, so the same card says something different depending on where it lands.
Which spread is best for beginners?
A three-card spread. Past, present, future is the classic, and it teaches the most important skill, reading cards in relation to each other, without ten positions to keep track of.
How many cards should a spread have?
As many as the question needs and no more. One card for a quick check-in, three for most questions, five when there are two people or several moving parts, ten for a full look at something that matters.
Can I make up my own spread?
Yes. Decide what you want to know, give each part its own position, and name the positions before you deal. A spread is just a set of questions arranged on the table.
